Twisted Root Restaurant, Waco, Texas

We’d heard a lot about the Twisted Root from some locals, so we decided to check it out one day. It’s definitely noticeable with its orange paint job and clever sign. It’s easy to find as well. It’s right off I-35 or if you’re going down Waco Drive, just head towards downtown to 2nd Street.

Twisted Root is a chain restaurant popular in Texas and Louisiana. The Waco restaurant is a popular hangout for Baylor University students. They have wi-fi, a bar, great food and music. They play music videos on large screens on the sides of the building. One screen plays the videos while the other may show a ball game or the local news with captioning turned on.

The restaurant is fairly dark with a bar in the center of the floor. Seats line the bar with tables forming a circle around them – both low and high-tops. When you order your food, they don’t ask your name or give you a number. You’re given a card with the name of a celebrity or a band. It’s fun to hear them call out “Celine Dion and the Monkees, your order is ready.”

They offer gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. The fries are NOT gluten-free, and there can be cross-contamination, so be aware of that. They also offer options other than beef for your burger, such as bison and venison. So far we’ve stuck with the basic burgers with gluten-free bread. The food is filling and the place definitely has personality. There’s an order board featuring their daily specials, including milk shakes and floats.

Have you ever been to a Twisted Root restaurant? What did you think? Let me know in the comments.
