Online Sellers – Time to Plan Ahead

I’m already seeing memes about Christmas and the holidays popping up on my Facebook page. It reminds me that as an online seller I need to always be thinking ahead so I can have items ready for customers to purchase.

Q4 is a big deal, but we also need to be ready for birthdays, Mother’s day, Father’s day, back to school, summertime, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day … anything we can think of, we should be ready for it. That’s why I’m always trying to think ahead.

eBay is easy to do this because it’s basically just keeping items in our pipeline. I want to list unique things that can be given as a gift or purchased by a collector for any occasion. I also want to have enough items in the pipeline so they’ll be available when the customer is ready to buy and I want to have a good, varied selection ready for the holidays.

Since we’re in the middle of a move, we’re letting some of our eBay inventory go and we’re also going to streamline the store. We’re going to complete an inventory check as we unpack at our place so we’ll be ready for Q4 and we’ll know we’ll have some great items available. The move is taking time away from listing, but I know once we reopen our eBay store in September – we have it on vacation now during the move – it will be a much better store. If we weren’t moving, we would be listing as often as possible as well as sourcing.

For my wedding / greeting card Zazzle store, I’m already thinking ahead for Valentine’s Day 2016, spring weddings, birthdays and baby showers. I’m researching ideas for designs and text now so that once we’re settled I can get those designs done and uploaded into the platform. I’m not thinking of the holidays for this year because I know I don’t have the time to focus on it right now.

I haven’t used a retail calendar with any consistency, but I think it would be helpful in thinking ahead and planning for possible events and seasons.

If you sell online, even as a hobby, do you plan ahead? Let me know in the comments or get in touch on Facebook or Twitter.
