San Antonio Free Summer Movies

Thanks to the wonderful San Antonio Mom’s Blog, I found out about Slab Cinema and the free movies they’re offering all around San Antonio this summer. We went to one a few weeks ago – we missed one because of the rain – but we’re looking forward to more all the way through the fall.

The best part is the closest location to us was the former Mission Drive-In (now Mission Marquee Plaza) next to Mission San Jose and the Mission Library. This is a beautiful landmark that was in danger of being torn down, but the City of San Antonio has placed it into their parks and recreation department and completed a year long renovation that started in 2012.

The former parking area is now a grass covered lawn perfect for picnics and for tossing around a ball or Frisbee. There’s also restroom facilities.

We brought a picnic to our last movie – chicken salad sandwiches on gluten free bread, chips, sweet tea and a yogurt parfait for dessert. I also popped us a bag of microwave popcorn before we left, but there was free popcorn at the park. If you decide to come and don’t want to bring a picnic, there are usually hamburgers and hot dogs for sale.

If you’re in San Antonio, maybe I’ll see you at the Mission Drive-In one night. What free things is your city doing for the summer? Let me know in the comments or get in touch on Facebook or Twitter.

  1. That sounds like an incredible venue for an outdoor movie! We have some of those around here too and love them…especially the price. 🙂

  2. Very cool! Will have to check it out if I make the drive to San Antonio.

  3. Adding this to our summer bucket list. Thanks for reminding me about this place! 🙂
