Counting Down My Top 10 Inspirational Broadway Musical Songs – Week 1

I’ve enjoyed plays and musicals for a long time, but it wasn’t until I started watching Glee that I was really introduced to musical theater – the stories and the lyrics to the songs. I have to credit Glee for introducing me to these songs and their inspirational messages, but now that I know they’re out there I’m looking for more. For the next 10 weeks I’ll be sharing my favorite inspirational songs from musicals – the stage or the movie version if that’s the one I know.

Number 10 – I’m the Greatest Star – Funny Girl

I have a theory about Barbra Streisand. Yes, she’s a talented performer and is deserving of her fame. She also played Fanny Brice in Funny Girl for two years on stage as well as the movie version, and she performed this song each time. What do you think your world would be like if you told the world for two plus years you were the greatest star?

Part of the song goes:

I’m the greatest star,
I am by far,
But no one knows it!
That’s why I was born-
I’ll blow my horn
Till someone blows it!

This is what I love about the song. It fits the character because she’s saying she believes in herself. She believes in herself so much that she’s going to blow her own horn until someone else does. Why not try it? Sing the verse and substitute what you want to be or do. Blow your own horn until someone else does and believe in yourself.

Do you like this song from Funny Girl? What’s your favorite inspirational Broadway song? Let me know in the comments or get in touch on Facebook or Twitter.

  1. I love Funny Girl! And I am a Gleeker, too. I love that they mix pop songs with musical theater staples.
