Inspirational Education Month – Suli Breaks – Hate School but Love Education

Many of us have kids going back to school or starting a new homeschooling year. I homeschooled my son from third grade through graduation, and while I miss those days (sometimes) it’s especially true at this time of the year. I see other bloggers talking about curriculum and taking those first day photos and it all comes back to me. So I thought I would spend the next month (August 31 – September 28) highlighting inspiring education.

Week 1 – Steve Jobs at Stanford

Week 2 – Rita Pierson – Every Child Needs a Champion

Week 3 – Logan LaPlante – Hackschooling

Week 4 – Jim Carrey Commencement Address

And now the final week – Suli Breaks – Why I Hate School but Love Education

Suli Breaks is a spoken word artist. Not necessarily a rapper, but a poet from the UK. This video was his breakout, garnering attention from UK and US media. His You Tube channel has over 140,000 subscribers and over 2 million people have watched this video.

I found this video after searching “education” on YouTube. I expected to find another Ted talk, but this one came up first. The title interested me, especially since as a homeschooling parent I knew the difference between school and education. One line that has stuck with me – if education is the key, school is the lock.

This young man blew me away, and while I’m apparently late to the party I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did.

What did you think if the video? Do you agree or disagree with his thoughts? What lines stuck with you? Let me know in the comments or get in touch on Facebook or Twitter.
