Inspirational Education Month – Logan LaPlante Hackschooling

Many of us have kids going back to school or starting a new homeschooling year. I homeschooled my son from third grade through graduation, and while I miss those days (sometimes) it’s especially true at this time of the year. I see other bloggers talking about curriculum and taking those first day photos and it all comes back to me. So I thought I would spend the next month (August 31 – September 28) highlighting inspiring education.

Week 1 – Steve Jobs Commencement Address Stanford University

Week 2 – Rita Pierson – Every Child Needs a Champion

Welcome to week 3 – Logan LaPlante, Hackschooling.

Logan LaPlante was 13 when he gave this TEDx talk about unschooling, what he calls “Hackschooling”. I love this video because he’s so well spoken and presents his ideas well. It also brought up memories of homeschooling my son and the fun we had over those years.

He’s funny, eloquent, and shows his knowledge and creativity.

Base education on the study of being happy and healthy – what a concept.

Some thoughts from the video:

Education is geared toward making a living, not making a life.

Sir Ken Robinson’s TED talk – Schools kill creativity. Creativity is as important as literacy.

His definition of hacking – changing the systems so they work differently. Hackers are innovators.

Everything in life can be hacked, including education.

By hacking education you can focus on what you enjoy and are passionate about.

What are your thoughts on Logan’s speech and homeschooling? Let me know in the comments or get in touch on Facebook or Twitter.
