Pray with Expectation and Thankfulness

Isaiah 43:19 (NLT) For I am about to do a brand-new thing. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness for my people to come home. I will create rivers for them in the desert!

If you’ve been praying for a change in your life – any kind of change – God begins answering that prayer immediately. Yes, immediately. He says this, right in Isaiah 43:19. He’s creating the rivers, making the paths. But you can’t see it, so you keep on praying, keep on asking.

The key to seeing the change God is making is expectation. Lift your head and open your eyes to the world around you and you’ll hear God speak. It may come from a word from a friend, in a sermon, through a song, even a movie or TV show. You never know where your answer may come from, but it is coming.

We can’t receive the answers to our prayers if we’re constantly in a state of asking. Yes, the Bible says to pray without ceasing. But those prayers don’t need to constantly be the same. God’s heard you, and he’s making a way. Yes, when in a stressful and difficult situation, it’s easiest to just keep praying for help and clarity. The difference in praying and praying with expectation is that your prayers will change. They will change from, “God, I can’t pay my rent. Please help me,” to “Thank you, Lord, for this beautiful day and the opportunity to go to work today. Thank you for providing for me.”

Pray with expectation, then offer thanks for the answers. Yes, offer thanks for the answers before you see them, before they’re made real. If the concern or worry returns, give it back over to God. “God, you know my situation. You know I’m worried about paying the rent. But you’ve provided for me in the past and I know you’ll do it again. Thank you for all you do.”

Then you need to let it go. You don’t know how the answer will come, but the how isn’t your job. You’ve given the issue to God. Now, rest in the promise that your answer is coming. God is making the way in the wilderness, a river in the desert. Lift your head, open your eyes, look and listen with expectation.
